Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Move Into Storage

June 26, 2025

Getting ready to move your things into a storage unit? Whether you’re downsizing, decluttering, or in between moves, how you pack can make a huge difference. The right packing techniques will help protect your items and make your life easier when it’s time to retrieve something.

Here’s how to make your storage move stress-free from start to finish:

1. Start with the Right Supplies

Before you pack a single box, gather quality packing materials:

  • Sturdy boxes in multiple sizes
  • Bubble wrap and packing paper
  • Plastic totes for items needing extra protection
  • Furniture blankets or moving pads
  • Clear labels and markers

Pro Tip: Avoid using plastic bags—they trap moisture and can cause mildew.

2. Label Everything Clearly

Mark every box on multiple sides with its contents and the room it belongs to. Trust us—future you will thank you when you’re searching for holiday decor, kitchen items, or important documents!

If you want to go the extra mile, make an inventory list to keep on your phone.

3. Pack by Priority

Think about how soon you’ll need certain items. Pack things you won’t need for a while (like seasonal decorations) towards the back of the unit. Keep essentials (like tools or frequently used business items) near the front for quick access.

4. Protect Furniture and Fragile Items

Disassemble furniture when possible to save space. Wrap table legs, glass, and mirrors with protective padding. Use bubble wrap and crumpled paper to cushion breakables inside boxes.

Stack heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter ones on top to prevent crushing.

5. Create Aisle Space in Your Unit

Don’t pack your unit floor to ceiling without leaving a walkway! Designate a narrow aisle through the center so you can reach items in the back without unpacking the entire unit.

Also, place items you may need to grab mid-storage term (like seasonal gear) near the front.

✅ 6. Use Vertical Space Wisely

Take advantage of your unit’s height by stacking boxes carefully and placing lighter, less fragile items up top. Use sturdy shelving units if you have them.
